The largest of the SUVs of Skoda is presented as the ideal alternative for those looking for a crossover of large dimensions and great habitability. The Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 150 horsepower is, without a doubt, one of the most recommended options.
Skoda is always used to doing things differently from the rest. The Czechs do not limit themselves to copying market trends, they adapt them to their philosophy and way of thinking and in this way, they offer us extremely attractive products. The Yeti was the first SUV of the brand, although its silhouette did not remind us of one. Its disappearance coincided with the arrival of the Skoda Kodiaq, an SUV with that look so sought after today, but also has many solutions that make it one of the most practical market.
As I say Skoda has been in this SUV since 2009 when the Yeti was launched. At that time, the Yeti did not look like an SUV proper, since it gave more importance to functionality than to form, hence it presented those lines more typical of a minivan. Obviously, Skoda began to work on the development of a new crossover, one that had the correct design, but that did not lose a bit of habitability and practicality. The result is obvious to the eye.
It can not be denied that the aesthetic leap is quite remarkable. The Kodiaq is an SUV with all the letters, and not only that, one that looks more than good, very attractive we could say. The truth is that its lines make us think that we are facing a bigger car than it really is. It measures 4.7 meters long and 1.88 meters long. These measures place it in the D-SUV segment where it faces rivals such as the Peugeot 5008, the KIA Sorrento, the Hyundai Santa Fe or the Nissan X-Trail, both in terms of size and price.
As I said before, the design is very attractive from start to finish. At the front, we have sought to create a balance between the typical look of a crossover and a more refined car. That’s why we have a large bumper and a ribbed bonnet, plus a more stylized area with split headlights and a well-worked grill. By the way, thanks to the different design packages we can count on several styles, the Sports Line seeks to bring a greater touch of sportsmanship, while the Scout is presented as the most beautiful of all.
On the side is where we better notice the Skoda Kodiaq stockings. The whole view is covered with very marked ribs, although the main one is the one that runs from front to rear of the car, which marks the waist of the car. We also have a very bulky trapezoidal wheel steps that are home to a few sets of tires that have a size that varies from 17 to 20 inches. And of course, it could not miss the detail of the plastics that protect the wheel arch and the entire lower part of the car.
When creating the front the designers had it “easy” we could say since they adopted the design philosophy of the other models of the house, especially the Skoda Superb. However, in the back they had to play a little more, and like in the rest of the car they work a lot with horizontal lines that serve to give that aspect of forcefulness. It is noteworthy that the bumper is not as big as in other rivals, but on the contrary, the gate itself has a considerable size.

From doors to inside dilutes a bit the daring and forceful design of the exterior. The aroma of the cabin is quite classic, very Germanic we could say, it presents the same structure that we already know of other models of the house, mainly the Skoda Karoq, The same could be said of the materials and adjustments, which are out of all criticism thanks to well-maintained surfaces, soft mostly but with some other hard plastic, which gives an excellent feeling both in quality and durability.
The ergonomics and the driving position are well worked and studied. From the elevated driver’s seat, everything is very close, except for the position of the buttons behind the gearshift lever. The central screen that reaches a size of 9’2 inches and a minimum of eight is located in the highest part of the center console so as not to neglect as little as possible the driving when we drive it in circulation, although it is practically impossible do not do it even a little.
The operation is tactile, and it is only necessary to put your hand near the proximity sensor of the screen so that the menu is displayed. It has a large number of added features, such as the browser, the reversing camera, all the infotainment and of course a wide connectivity capacity for all types of mobile devices. In addition, depending on the level of equipment, you can have the Wi-Fi connection, which allows you to see the maps through Google Earth and download applications.
The truth is that the technological deployment of the Kodiaq is quite advanced. In addition to the large screen of the center console, we can integrate a large number of driving assistance, such as the blind spot indicator, the lane inadvertent change warning, and the lane maintenance system, the adaptive cruise control, the jam aide and the camera with recognition of signals and obstacles.
You also have to add more elements that want to make life on board more comfortable, such as the 360º camera, the boot of the trunk without hands, the opening and starting without a key, the park assist, sunroof, heated front and rear seats, charger by induction … To all this, in a few months, we will have to add the expected digital instrument panel, being the Karoq the first Skoda model to have it.
The Kodiaq relies on the same MQB platform that we can see in other models of the Volkswagen Group, such as the SEAT Ateca, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Audi Q5 or even its small brother the Karoq, which a few months ago we had the opportunity to test and analyze thoroughly reaping very good opinions.
However, in the Kodiaq that platform has been extended in the wheelbase to accumulate almost 2.8 meters, the same as a Volkswagen Passat. That, added to the ability of the Czechs to take advantage of every millimeter of space, translates into a tremendous space for this second row of seats. A pity that does not have the VarioFlex system of his little brother because to have it the Kodiaq would become a whole MPV, Too bad it does not have three ISOFIX anchors either.
Not even moving the stool to its position further forward the space is compromised. This recline is designed to facilitate the passage to the third row of optional seats. Two extra seats for which Skoda charges us just over 1,000 euros. Access is not all bad, but you have to have some agility to enter without losing dignity in the process. Once you are seated you realize that its use is mainly intended for children, although two adults can go reasonably well as long as the second row moves forward and the route is not too long.
One of the keys of the Kodiaq is the size of its trunk. Since there are several possible configurations there are several volumes. The minimum is with the third row unfolded, and they are 270 liters. If we beat it we will have 560 liters of minimum cubic capacity, although that number rises to 720 if we do not assemble the third row of seats. Finally, with all the rear seats pushed down we have a maximum volume of 2,005 liters. Finally, if the passenger seat is not electric, this allows its abatement with which we will obtain a cargo space whose length is greater than three meters.
Of course, we can not forget those Simply Clever details so characteristic of Skoda, and that many brands are trying to emulate. Simple but terribly practical ideas in various situations, such as the trunk light, the rubber door guard that unfolds when opened, the bin, the scraper in the tank and in this case the umbrella hidden in the driver’s door.

The mechanical range of the Kodiaq presents an offer with two gasoline engines and one diesel that in turn will be able to offer two different levels of performance, with 150 and 190 horses. All the variants, except for gasoline access, will have the possibility to be associated with an automatic DSG change and with a 4×4 all-wheel drive. In the future, still, to be determined, a version will arrive that will be positioned as the most powerful and extreme variant of all. It will be called Skoda Kodiaq RS and has already been seen during its development stage.
