Audi Q8 test
The first contact with the Audi Q8 50 TDI with 286 HP We travel to Italy to see first-hand this SUV Coupé, which tries to further increase the halo of exclusivity of premium Audi models,
The Q range, successful at the sales level that sports the Quattro logo, is enriched by a new model, which is located at the top of the range. This is the new Audi Q8 SUV sports relative to the Lamborghini Urus and that in the future will serve as the basis for the future Porsche Cayenne Coupé.
A sporty and elegant aspect are the keys to achieving a subtle balance between these two elements that bring the range of Audi SUVs to new horizons that are becoming more attractive in all markets, not only in Europe.
We have visited the unparalleled landscapes of Lake Como, Italy, to discover how it is and how is the latest Premium proposal of the four rings brand. Here is our first test.
Exterior: A Look At The Future of The Q Range
The new Audi Q8 measures 4.98 m long, 1.99 m wide and 1.70 m high, is slightly lower than its brother Q7 by 3.8 cm, in addition to being 6.6 cm shorter it is 2.7 cm wider. The long wheelbase and its SUV Coupé shapes, with low overhangs and a sloping roofline, contribute to its sporty appearance, but the innovations continue in the design.
This model shares the modular platform used to build the A8 luxury saloon. The front has a prominent space for its octagonal front grille that configures the new face of the Q family. This is combined with the newly designed three-dimensional optical groups and with a side view showing all the muscles of the model with an inspired roof drop in the legendary Audi Quattro.
Although the new Audi Q8 has a low enough height to be an SUV, the distance from the body to the ground is generous, in principle 20 cm, which can increase up to 254 mm thanks to the adaptive pneumatic suspension (1,900 dollars). In the American market, the alloy wheels are available from a size of 19 “and reach a maximum of 22 inches, like the one that equips our test unit.
The Q8 has a very characteristic rear, the LED rear pilots, also three-dimensional, are joined by a thin band that integrates a LED thread. The tailgate is electric as standard, and the bumper diffuser incorporates two rear exhaust outlets, one on each side.
The Audi Q8 is available in twelve colors for the body, of which two are solid colors (415 dollars) and nine metallics (from 1,330 dollars), among which stand out the new shades of Orange Dragon (color of the unit that we are testing ) and Blue Galaxy. Also available is the Gray Daytona Pearl effect for 4,345 dollars.
Interior: Three Screens, Comfort And A Lot of Space
The interior of the Audi Q8 is a true futuristic lounge, in which digitization has reached almost every corner. The element that most attracts our attention is the multimedia screen of the MMI multimedia system (standard), inserted in a large black panel, and from which all the elements that characterize the control station depart, such as the horizontal arrangement of the outputs of ventilation of the automatic air conditioning of double zone (or series), topped with lamellae of chrome.
The multimedia system and the climate control module of the Audi Q8 is virtually devoid of adjustment buttons. In addition to the 10.1-inch top screen, dedicated to vehicle information and navigation data, there is a lower 8.6-inch screen that allows us to operate the climate control, comfort functions and text input to insert directions, for example. The new multimedia system MMI allows the commands to be activated through a tactile confirmation, touching the surface of the screen and also with voice commands.
Behind the multifunction steering wheel, optionally heated or with a sporty flattened design on the bottom, sports the well-known Audi Virtual Cockpit, 100% digital instrumentation, with a size of 12.3 inches that provides information on everything related to the new Audi Q8, browser included, of course.
The front seats of the Audi Q8 are available in four variants: in addition to the standard seats, with three-stage heating or ventilation and the massage function, sports seats and S sports seats with integrated head restraints can be chosen.
Complete the technological equipment the “intelligent” voice commands and Audi connect, a system that integrates online navigation, dialogue between Car-to-X cars and other services such as media transmission, online news and navigation with Google Earth, as well as access to Twitter, to the email inbox and to the hybrid, analog and digital radio function. Optionally we can choose the Bang & Olufsen speaker system, bringing a three-dimensional sound management similar to a concert hall.
Thanks to the wheelbase of 2,995 mm, the Audi Q8 offers a cabin for up to five people, with plenty of room for the shoulders and head, despite the inclined drop of the roof, with space for the legs of the rear passengers.
For them, there is a row of seats of 3 seats adjustable in 10 cm in length. The storage compartments in the door panels have a total volume of more than 14 liters. The trunk offers a capacity of 605 liters, which can be increased to 1,755 liters if we fold the seats.
Audi Q8, Range of Engines
The Audi Q8 debuts with the 3.0 turbo diesel engine, named with the recent nomenclature as Q8 50 TDI. The V6 Diesel offers 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds and reaching a top speed of 245 km / h.
All engines adopt the technology mild-hybrid (MHEV), which allows reducing consumption up to 0.7 l / 100 km. The system incorporates a lithium-ion battery and a starter motor, which also functions as an alternator, belt-driven (RSG) on a 48-volt main board network, allowing up to 40 seconds of inertial running between 55 and 160 km / h, in addition to allowing the start-stop system to start working at 22 km / h.
In the first months of 2019 will also debut a version of 231 Diesel CV of three liters, the 45 TDI, and a 3.0 TFSI petrol 340 hp, 55 TFSI.
Test Audi Q8 50 TDI: Yacht Comfort, Driving SUV
The only engine available today, the 50 TDI offers 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque, which has the task of moving the more than 2,100 kg of vehicle weight. The TDI engine is combined with the eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox and offers an automatic and sequential manual mode.
An inseparable combination: Audi and Quattro traction. In the most luxurious model of the Q range, it was not going to be less, obligatorily equipped the system of integral traction. Under normal conditions, the mechanical center differential distributes the torque between the front and rear axles in a 40:60 ratio, thus favoring momentum from the rear.
Thanks to a small section of off-road we were able to briefly test the qualities of the Q8 in sections without asphalting, although judging from its appearance the mission of this car is certainly not this one. The height from the ground to the body, the four-wheel drive, and the adaptive air suspension work in harmony allowing to face quite difficult obstacles. The only limit is the size of the tires (the larger the worse the traction) and the absence of bumpers or protective plates in the most exposed parts.
If varying the height of the Q8 is very useful on dirt roads, on the asphalt the body of the car lowers in favor of aerodynamics, offering four configurations and up to 90 mm of travel. On the road, the model is stable in curves and changes of direction, even if you increase in speed and increase the pace.
Using the Audi drive select, we can choose between seven driving profiles: comfort, auto, dynamic, individual, efficient, all road and off-road. Audi’s drive selection system configures and conditions the delivery of engine power, transmission, steering calibration, automatic air conditioning operation, and integral steering.
The latter is one of the strengths of the Audi Q8 and consists of the presence of the directional rear axle turning the rear wheels to a maximum of 5 degrees and up to 60 km / h in the opposite direction to the front for better agility, and for over 60 km / h it rotates in the same direction, to make the changes of trajectory in the smaller distance and possible time.
Good work is done with the progressive power steering, which becomes more and more direct with the increase in the steering angle, although it must be recognized that it has a usual defect in Audi cars: to lightness. The engine, however, surprises in all aspects, as the low speeds push well and go up in laps offering force without interruption, in total silence, thanks to the optimal soundproofing of the passenger compartment.
Integral Steering Makes The Q8 Agile In Both Straight And Fast Corners
Finally comment that the Audi Q8 equipped a high-tech module that the brand called as “central controller zFAS”, which creates a continuous image of the surrounding environment of the car. This controller receives data from five radar sensors, six cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and a laser scanner.
Apart from 2019, thanks to this system we can use the “remote garage pilot” assistant to put or leave our SUV in the garage autonomously, only using our mobile phone but for the moment we will enjoy adaptive cruise control, the assistant efficiency, the crossing assistant, the alert system for involuntary lane change and the curbside assistant.
